Background:

The intersection at Evergreen Avenue and 2700 East in Salt Lake City, Utah, known by locals as the 'S' curve, was remade in 2007 year in order to make it safer for both motorists and pedestrians.  As a result, a small parcel of County owned property adjacent to the sidewalk on the Northwest corner of the intersection (called a bulb-out) is now an eyesore unbecoming of the most prominent intersection in an area that was recently designated a historic district by the State.

What is the Evergreen & 27th Historical Project?

The project is an effort to remake this intersection into the focal point of Historic East Mill Creek by constructing a partial rock wall along the property line that reflects the material and style of the rock wall bordering the LDS Church directly across the street.  One or more aspects of the colorful and rich history of the area will be highlighted through development of a historical marker on the site.  Individuals and families having a stake in the community will have an opportunity to support the project and leave a lasting legacy with engraved donor pavers and large stones which will be used to landscape the bulb-out and provide a reflective resting point.

Why do the project?

The County had planned to simply dump a load of white rock on the dirt due to lack of funds available for landscaping the intersection properly. Through the efforts a small group of community members along with assistance from a county liaisons, the County has been persuaded to let the community handle the project.

Bolstered by the recent designation as a historic district the project aims to highlight the rich history of the district, to allow this prominent intersection to reflect its heritage and to give individual community members an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Where will the funds come from to complete the project?

From "viewers" like you! Fundraising efforts have just begun. The primary method will be the placement of various sized pavers and large rocks engraved with the name(s) of supporters.  The donor levels will be determined by May 22, 2009, and will be posted on the Donor Pavers page of this site along with order details.
